What is Endurance?
Stress is always with us. It is a part of our daily lives. Stress can be our enemy...or it can be our teacher.
In the midst of horrific wartime, Prime Minister Winston Churchill encouraged the British people by telling them the strikes on their country would be "our finest hour." Churchill's endurance encouraged and led his countrymen to find endurance of their own.
Society today seems out of tune and out of sync. The economy and unrest throughout the world has drastically changed many lives. The family of yesteryear is not the family of today. Our culture, entertainment, news, schools and workplaces are definitely different from those of our parents and grandparents. Without endurance, it would be easy to become discouraged and to give up.
As steel and glass are tempered through extreme heat and cold to gain strength and beauty, we are tempered with stress to gain a perspective on life, to learn patience, hope and gratefulness. We must dig deep within ourselves to learn these things, but in short, we learn endurance.
As Thomas Carlyle noted," Wondrous is the strength of cheerfulness and its power of endurance. The cheerful man will do more in the same time, will do it better, will preserve it longer, than the sad or sullen."
We can learn from stress. We can find contentment and joy in the smallest of things. We can find strength and hope, regardless of circumstances. We can support and encourage others. It has been said that endurance is patience concentrated.
