Born in Montgomery, Alabama, Otis Reeves started attending the Y when he was only 9 old. Over the years, he participated in programs at the Y, worked as a counselor and instructor, and has always done what was needed at the YMCA--even before he was asked. During this time he developed the strong desire to help guide young people. This desire grew while he attended Sanford University and he continued his relationship with the YMCA by working at a branch nearby. After graduation, he served in the United States Marine Corp, where he learned the importance of discipline and respect for others.
He returned to Montgomery, AL as a Vietnam Veteran and immediately began working again at the Montgomery YCMA under the direction of “Mr. YMCA”, Bill Chandler. After working with Bill for more than a year, Otis heard the Prattville Y was looking for employees, and this was the start of his more than 40 years of service to the Prattville YMCA.
It would be difficult to find someone in Prattville whose life has not been touched by Otis Reeves. He chooses to remain out of the limelight and avoids the praise, preferring to thank God for his infinite wisdom and direction throughout his life. However, when Prattville YMCA General Manager Mr. Willis Bradford thought it would be good to start a new gymnastics program at the Prattville Y, Otis Reeves stepped up and began building what has become one of the best Gymnastics Programs in the state of Alabama.
Honesty, loyalty, responsibility, initiative, dedication, humility, integrity, and character are just some of the words to describe Otis Reeves. We are honored that although he is “Mr. Gymnastics” throughout the State of Alabama--to us he is our very own Otis!
