Mr. Jack Smith, known affectionately by many as "Captain Jack", is a 2016 Citizen of Character award winner. If he is not at home with his wife, you’ll find him in the Prattville community at his church, the golf course or at Habitat for Humanity in Prattville.
He has logged more than 2008 hours at Habitat helping to construct over twenty houses in Autauga County. Lisa Green, executive director for Habitat says, “Captain Jack’s endurance is what sets him apart, he is an inspiration to others who are working with him to construct homes in our community. He is always smiling, respectful, and determined to give his best to complete the project at hand.”
Mr. Smith was born ninety-three years ago in Western Kentucky and grew up during the depression; which meant times were hard. He says the only things you had were church, family, neighbors and friends. His parents taught him at an early age to help people and to be respectful of others. During his youth, he fell in love with the Boy Scouts and all they represented, which he feels made a tremendous effect on his life.
When World War II broke out, Mr. Smith was too young to enlist and needed someone to sign for him. At that time, he told his father, "If you don't sign for me to join the military, I will will find someone in the street that will." Against his better judgement, his father signed him up at the young age of 17 and the United States Navy became Captain Jack's home for the next 38 years!
Jack Smith started his service in the military in programs development during WWII, he served in intelligence in Korea for the 6th fleet, and commanded a destroyer in Vietnam escorting aircraft carriers. During all of those years, he is amazed at how God has worked during his life. Beginning his military career as an enlistee and retiring as a Captain, and escaping death more than once, proves to him that his life was entirely God driven, and taught him to always respect others and to help his fellowman.
Habitat for Humanity is one of Captain Jack’s favorite chances to give back to the community; we are grateful for all that he has done and continues to do to ensure that our community remains one of character!
Thank you, Captain Jack, for being an incredible role model for our community and congratulations for being nominated and selected as a 2016 Citizen of Character.
